Tornado Causes Heavy Damage in Coal City, Illinois
A tornado touched down Monday in Coal City, Illinois, damaging homes, bringing down power lines and leaving roadways flooded, authorities said. The severe weather was reported after 9 p.m.
The National Weather Service confirmed a number of tornadoes in the region, including one in Coal City, a 5,500-population village located southwest of Chicago.
According to a news release by Coal City’s Fire and EMS, flooding left many roadways impassable, and search crews worked to remove people from their homes. This morning, crews expect to assess the storm damage.No fatalities or serious injuries were reported due to the storm, Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan told ABC News, but many buildings, including the fire department, suffered substantial damage.
“Houses that were there once are just not there anymore,” Logan said.
An emergency shelter was established at the Coal City High School, which is located at 650 W. Division St.
A tornado was previously reported in Coal City in 2013.
